Protecting a remote solar energy site

A renewable energy operations and maintenance (O&M) company contacted us to upgrade a failing CCTV camera system at one of their UK sites.

Several cameras had stopped working, poles had deteriorated, and only one Axis CCTV camera remained functional.

As a result, they needed a cost-conscious way to restore coverage and secure the plant.

  • Upgrade and replace failing and faulty CCTV cameras
  • Get the one working Axis Communications camera recording again
  • Supply durable poles suited to remote terrain
  • Meet planning requirements for height and visibility
  • Protect against theft, intrusion and system downtime

We began by visiting the site to conduct a technical audit and assess the condition of the current system.

Assessing the current security camera system

An experienced solar farm security specialist reviewed the site layout and current CCTV hardware.

Most of the existing cameras on the system had failed, leaving the solar farm vulnerable.

Break-ins, panel theft and vandalism exposed serious weaknesses across the site.

As a result, the system no longer met renewable energy asset protection standards.

This increased the risk of disruption, especially financial loss and operational issues.

  • Several security cameras had stopped recording or lost power
  • Poles had collapsed or shifted, affecting coverage angles
  • The only working camera was not connected to any recorder
  • Hikvision bullet cameras were recommended for clarity and reliability
  • Failure of the existing system left the site exposed to serious threats

Upon completing the review, we designed a fix, restoring coverage while reusing working components.

Improving the faulty CCTV system

We proposed a phased upgrade to bring the site back online quickly.

This included installing a new NVR, setting up replacement poles, and linking the operational Axis camera into the new system.

Here’s what we recommended:

  • Install bullet cameras in key zones across the site
  • Integrate the functional Axis camera with a new Hik NVR
  • Use pressure-treated timber poles for greater strength and stability
  • Space camera placements for complete perimeter coverage
  • Improve video clarity and recording reliability

This combination kept costs down while significantly improving coverage and resilience.

How we upgraded the system cost-effectively

All work was carried out with zero disruption to the site’s daily operations.

The upgraded system now covers the perimeter and protects equipment and infrastructure.

The site now features high-definition monitoring and recorded footage available for review.

  • Hikvision bullet cameras installed in priority zones
  • New poles set into concrete and aligned for stable viewing angles
  • Axis camera connected to the Hikvision NVR for centralised recording
  • All cameras tested for coverage, motion triggers and playback
  • Site handed back with working footage and improved visibility

The system now delivers dependable surveillance, helping the operator reduce risks linked to:

  • Downtime
  • Damage
  • Lost revenue
