The operator of a utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) site required 24/7 protection to secure their assets and revenue.
Protecting high-value assets like inverters, transformers, and lithium-ion battery modules against theft, intrusion, and vandalism are key concerns, for operators of renewable energy sites.
Given the strategic role BESS sites play in ensuring the stability of the UK’s energy supply, deploying advanced security solutions is essential.
This project focused on protecting the site’s physical assets and maintaining operational integrity. And, the overall operational goal was to ensure continuous energy storage and distribution without interruption.
Risk assessment & system recommendations
A senior security systems surveyor from Safeguard Systems conducted a thorough site audit and risk assessment.
During this process, unauthorised access, sabotage, and equipment theft were identified as key threats to site security.
Our surveyor met with the site manager to discuss these vulnerabilities and explore effective solutions.
Drawing on extensive experience from protecting over 300 solar farms and renewable sites across the UK, Safeguard Systems recommended a tailored, monitored CCTV and perimeter security solution.
Our solution – CCTV monitoring & perimeter protection
Safeguard Systems proposed an advanced CCTV monitoring, intruder detection, and perimeter protection solution.
The surveillance cameras would serve as a visual deterrent and detect threats through motion sensors, which, when triggered, would alert the monitoring station.
To improve detection after dark and assist with visual verification, IR lamps were recommended.
This 24/7 monitored security solution was designed to detect, deter, and respond to potential threats in real time.
The installation
The customer was extremely satisfied with the final installation, as it fully met all their security objectives and requirements. Here’s some detail about the system:
- Hikvision bullet surveillance cameras to detect intruders approaching the perimeter
- Video analytics to offer accurate human detection and reduced false alarms
- Infrared (IR) lamps to improve human detection in low-light conditions
- Penton loudspeakers enabling offsite security operatives to communicate with intruders
This 24/7 monitored security solution was designed to detect, deter, and respond to potential threats in real time.
As a result, the system delivered on all security objectives.
